The Beginning

I started drinking coffee when I was seven years old, in my grandmother’s kitchen, with her and my mom. Coffee has been at the center of my life ever since. I was sitting in my old office one day, thinking about how much I wanted to have my own business. I was also thinking how much I’d really like to have a good cup of coffee. My wife, Julie, had the sense to see that these dreams weren’t mutually exclusive, and suggested opening a coffeehouse. I said, ‘fine, let’s do that.' And we did. In January 2005, The Little Dog Coffee Shop opened its doors.

Our Place

The Little Dog Coffee Shop sits on the corner of Maine and Bank Streets in Brunswick, ME. It’s a big space, with twelve-foot high ceilings, local artist exhibitions, and huge storefront windows that invite sunshine in. We seat about 50 people at tables, chairs, booster seats, and comfy sofas, and, as soon the weather warms up, we spill onto the street as a sidewalk café.

Everything we do and serve at the Little Dog is on display. What we brew, bake, grill, or pour is all right in front of our customers. The description we hear most often about the Little Dog is that it’s a warm, friendly place. We believe, and hope that we live up to our mission statement, which describes Little Dog as ‘an easy and familiar space, where everyone is welcome.’

What We Serve

Our coffee and espresso beans are roasted in Portland, Maine, by a certified organic manufacturer that directly sources only sustainably farmed green coffee beans. We are extremely proud of how we brew and pour at the Little Dog. We regularly train and educate ourselves to the current and highest brewing standards. Our goal is to ensure that each cup is served exactly how our customers prefer it.

Food has become a big part of the Little Dog, with a menu that evolved organically. When we first opened, what we didn’t wholesale already prepared, Julie baked and cooked up in our (certified) kitchen at home. Later in our first year, though, Julie gave birth to our twins, and we started preparing, baking, and grilling everything we serve right in the Little Dog. If you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon sweet treat, we make, bake and serve it right here, every day.

Who is the Little Dog?

Otis is, of course — once we committed to the small, local business life, Julie and I tossed around many names with friends. Our criteria was simple — easy to remember and without an agenda. We hoped to make it clear that the Little Dog had a big heart and invited everyone.

Otis does have a big heart, but he is a shy little pup, which is why, along with state health codes, you many not have had the pleasure of meeting our logo’s inspiration at the shop. Keep your eyes open though, you can always spot Otis around town. If you notice a German Shepard looking torso scampering around on Corgi legs, you may have seen our little namesake.

If you do think you’ve come across Otis in your travels, like all dogs, large and small, he likes a good scratch behind the ears. And while you’re in the neighborhood, come by the shop, sit with your favorite drink or snack, stay a while, and enjoy our space.
